Good free SFI material sits at your level and follows Skolverket's syllabus for SFI. Beyond SFI has two free courses with hundreds of exercises at the level of courses C and D, built on Skolverket's syllabus for SFI. News in easy Swedish, a free dictionary and the library's easy readers fill in the rest. Here is what we have checked, and how to use it for 20 minutes a day.
What makes good SFI material?
Good SFI material is at your level, trains every part of the language and is about real situations. Four things to look for:
- Your level, plus a little. You should understand most of it, but not everything. If everything is easy, you learn little. If you understand less than half, you just get tired.
- All five parts. The SFI syllabus has five areas: listening, reading, talking with others, speaking on your own and writing. In the national test, the two speaking areas form the part Tala. Grammar on paper trains only a small part of that.
- Real situations. A text message to a neighbour, a letter from vårdcentralen (the health centre), a conversation in a shop. That is the Swedish you need in daily life, and it is the Swedish the syllabus is about.
- A way to check yourself. An answer key, a checklist or a model answer. Otherwise you don't know if you are doing it right.
Two free courses for courses C, D and after SFI
Beyond SFI has two free courses built on Skolverket's syllabus for SFI. They give you hundreds of exercises in everyday situations.
| Everyday Swedish A2 | Everyday Swedish B1+ | |
|---|---|---|
| Fits | During course C and early in course D | Late in course D and after SFI |
| Goal | A2+ | B1+ |
| Chapters | 14 (you do 13) and a final exam | 10 and a final exam |
| Exercises | About 186 | About 129 |
| Time | About 42 hours | About 40 hours |
| Price | Free, with exam and certificate | Free, with exam and certificate |
Every chapter is a situation from daily life. A chapter has the same parts every time:
- a text to read, often a message, a table or a letter
- a conversation to listen to with questions, and a dictation where you write what you hear
- flashcards with the chapter's words and phrases
- a gap-fill text and a sentence to build, with one grammar point in context
- a short message you write twice: once to a friend, and once politely, for example to a teacher or a landlord
- a recording where you speak on your own
Reading questions, listening questions, gap fills and sentences are checked straight away. The writing tasks and the recording come with a checklist and a model answer, so you can check yourself. The chapters:
| Course | Chapters |
|---|---|
| Everyday Swedish A2 | Det här är jag (This is me) · Handla mat och kläder (Shopping for food and clothes) · På café och restaurang (At a café and a restaurant) · Att ta sig fram (Getting around) · Hemma med grannarna (At home with the neighbours) · Fritid och nya vänner (Free time and new friends) · Årstider, natur och högtider (Seasons, nature and holidays) · Vårdcentralen och apoteket (The health centre and the pharmacy) · När något händer (When something happens) · Pengar i vardagen (Money in everyday life) · På jobbet or På SFI (at work or in the SFI class, you pick one) · Brev och blanketter (Letters and forms) · Samhället och nyheterna (Society and the news) |
| Everyday Swedish B1+ | Groceries and faulty goods · Out in town: asking and helping · Socialising: invitations and small talk · Home and the landlord · At the doctor's appointment · Urgent care: 112, 1177 or akuten · At work (optional) · Student life: group, språkkafé, teacher (optional) · Försäkringskassan and other authorities · Society and the news: speak up |
The courses, the final exams and the certificate are free. With Plus, which costs money, you get AI feedback on what you write and say, and you can chat with an AI conversation partner. A free account can try AI feedback once on a text and once on a dictation, and chat once.
Good to know: the courses use different material from your SFI class, and they are not the national test. The certificate is from Beyond SFI and is not a Skolverket grade. The courses add to your teacher and your class. News, books and conversations with real people are free elsewhere. They are in the next section.
Free material for every part of the language
We checked that everything below exists and is free. It is sorted by what you practise.
| Part | Free material | In the courses |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 8 Sidor (8sidor.se): short news in easy Swedish, new every weekday and free to read on the web. The library's easy readers: ask for the "lättläst" shelf. | A text in every chapter |
| Listening | Klartext on Sveriges Radio: short news in simple Swedish. Radio Sweden på lätt svenska: news for people new to Sweden, every weekday. On 8 Sidor you can also listen to the articles. | Listening questions and dictation |
| Words | Lexin (lexin.nada.kth.se): a free dictionary from the Institute for Language and Folklore (Isof), with Swedish and many other languages. | Flashcards in every chapter |
| Talking with others | A språkcafé (language café) at the library, at Svenska kyrkan, at Röda Korset or at a study association. Free, usually no sign-up, no grades. | Written chat with an AI partner (Plus, one chat free) |
| Writing | Write to a real person: a text to your neighbour, an e-mail to the school. Ask someone who speaks Swedish to read it. | Two messages in every chapter |
| Speaking on your own | Read an 8 Sidor article. Then tell what it is about in your own words and record yourself on your phone. Listen and compare. | A recording in every chapter |
Free exercises on this blog
The blog also has practice articles. They give you a short explanation and free exercises right in the text, with no account. A good start is word order after words like igår and sedan or reading comprehension with three texts and answers, both for courses C and D. New practice articles are added over time.
Preparing for the national test?
The old national tests are confidential, so you won't find them for free online. How you can still practise each part of the test is in our guide to preparing for the test.
How to use it: 20 minutes a day
A little every day does more than a lot once a week. A normal week can look like this:
| Day | 20 minutes |
|---|---|
| Monday | One exercise in the course. Look up new words in Lexin. |
| Tuesday | Read an article in 8 Sidor. Then listen to it. |
| Wednesday | The next exercise in the course. |
| Thursday | Listen to Klartext or Radio Sweden på lätt svenska. |
| Friday | Write a short message to a real person. |
| Weekend | Go to a språkcafé, or read an easy reader. |
More ideas are in five habits that keep your Swedish going.
Our honest take
There is a lot of free material online. Much of it is too easy, too hard or just lists of grammar. The best material makes you use your Swedish: read something real, answer, write to someone. Your teacher knows what you can do and what you need. Ask what you should practise most, then choose material for that. Free material works best a little at a time, every day, next to your course.
